With its lake, boathouse, trails, historic fort, and zoo, Grant Park was called the “most ambitious city play-ground in the South” in 1895 by Harper’s New Monthly Magazine. In its early years, the zoo was a menagerie designed to provide entertaining curiosities in cages. During the 1890s, Gress continued to tour other zoos across America looking for new animals and new ideas. The animals from the circus included four lions, a hyena, and several monkeys, among other animals. Courtesy of Georgia Department of Economic Development.
